Our Story

More than a place to play — a place to belong.

The Tile Society is a Mahjong studio in Wyckoff, NJ offering beginner and intermediate lessons, competitive leagues, and curated social events throughout the New Jersey tri-state area — designed for connection, curiosity, and learning.

We approach Mahjong as a “CrossFit for the brain”: stimulating, social, and deeply rewarding. Our atmosphere is warm, inclusive, and intentionally calm. We value good manners, mutual respect, and a shared love of the game.

Meet the Founder

Erika built this for the love of the game

Erika is the founder of Gather Create Nourish — a wellness-rooted community centered on connection and care — and the creator of The Tile Society, its Mahjong collective. Her Mahjong journey began in 2018 when her mother, Wendy Statuto, taught her the game she'd learned back in the 70s.

What started as a way to gather with friends became something deeper: a blend of strategy, ritual, and joy that brings women together across generations. Drawing on a background in wellness, education, and hospitality, Erika brings a calm, welcoming energy to the table.

Having moved across the country three times, she knows how vulnerable it can feel to start over and find your people. Her vision is simple: Mahjong should be open, inclusive, and expansive — so anyone who wants to learn, play, and grow can always find a seat at the table.

A fun, welcoming three-morning Canasta experience. Whether you're brand new or building confidence before open play, this series takes you from beginner to player in three sessions.

Canasta 101 — Fundamentals, terminology, scoring, and gameplay basics.

Canasta 102 — Strategy, gameplay flow, and confidence-building techniques.

Guided Play — Put your new skills into action with instructor support.

Do I need to know how to play before joining?

Not at all. We welcome everyone, and our beginner lessons are built to teach you from your very first tile. Most members start here and find their footing fast.

How often do you have events?

We host regular lessons, guided play sessions, leagues, and social events throughout the week. The live schedule is the best place to see what's coming up and grab a seat.

Can I join a league even if I'm a beginner?

Absolutely. We have leagues and sessions that cater to all skill levels — beginners are genuinely welcome at the table.

What should I bring?

Just yourself and a positive attitude. We provide everything you need to learn and play.
